MICROGREEN Onion Seeds

What are Microgreens?

Microgreens are young, edible greens that are harvested at an early stage of growth, typically when the first true leaves (the second set of leaves) have developed. They are smaller than baby greens and larger than sprouts, often measuring 1-3 inches in height. Microgreens are valued for their intense flavors, vibrant colors, and nutrient density, making them popular as garnishes, in salads, sandwiches, and as ingredients in various dishes.

Benefits of Growing Onion Microgreens

Grow all year round and get a steady supply of nutritious greens. From seed to harvest, onion microgreens only take 2-3 weeks. Onion can also be grown as sprouts, with a harvest time of only 4-5 days.

Add an onion flavour to your dishes without ‘onion tears’. Onion microgreens have the same intense onion flavour as regular onions, and a mellow and sweet aftertaste.

How to Grow Onion Microgreens

  • Pre-soak seeds: Soak seeds for 2 – 6 hours.
  • Sow rate: Use approximately 20 grams for a 10 x 10″ growing tray.
  • Grow medium: Use soil or a hemp growing mat to provide a good medium for growth.
  • Seed germination temperature: Keep between 18-24°C for optimal germination.
  • Method: Moisten the soil or medium and spread seeds evenly over the surface. Lightly press seeds into the soil to ensure good contact.
  • Watering: Water lightly once or twice daily to keep the soil consistently moist.
  • Cover and germinate: Cover the tray with a lid for the first 1-2 days to encourage germination.
  • Weight the tray: Yes, use a weight or another tray to help seeds make good contact with the soil.
  • Remove cover: Once seeds have sprouted, remove the cover and place the tray in a location with indirect sunlight.
  • Watering: Continue to water lightly once or twice daily as the microgreens grow.
  • Harvest: Harvest onion microgreens in approximately 14 – 21 days by cutting just above the soil line with clean scissors or a sharp knife.

Rinse harvested microgreens gently to remove any soil particles before enjoying them in your favorite dishes.
